Well, In today’s world everything is becoming digital and online. In the future, the internet will be the master of every communication.
So, in this rapidly changing world, it is much required that you should also be online. Make your digital presence in the digital world. A blog is one of the best tools of taking yourself online.
In today’s lesson, I will be teaching you the 12 steps of starting a blog. A WordPress blog that makes money. Starting a blog is just like starting a new business.
If starting a blog is like starting a business then the process should be the same. So, here we will discuss the analogy of starting a blog by starting a business.
There are various steps in starting a business, so do starting a blog have.
So, Let us start with each step of starting a blog.
Step #1. Preparing Your Mindset
You must be thinking, why would I included mindset as Step-1?
Well, everything, every business, even every action needs a clear mindset. A clear mindset will make you focused on your goal.
Here mindset means preparing yourself completely before starting a blog or a business. This is the 1st step and it is very crucial. Just like a foundation stone.
A Story of me and my father
To elaborate this much better, let me tell you a story. A story of mine and my father.
One day I went to my father and said, “Papa, I need money.” My father said nothing, just nodded and smiled.
After a few moments, he asked, “Well, what would you do with that money?”
“I will start a business,” I replied. Then he exclaimed, “Hanhan! What kind of business will you start?”
“I don’t know.” I again replied. My father said, “So, you are going to start a business that you even don’t know. Now, let me know, how much money do you need?”
I again replied with a confused gesture, “I don’t know this too.”
“My son, you are planning to start a business that you don’t know. You even don’t know how much money it would need?” My father said in conscious gesture.
“Ok, I will let you start a business and will financially help you. But, I need you to do some research in starting a business.” said my father.
He advised me, “My son, before starting a business you should be aware of few things.”
Things my Father Taught
The things my father taught me were
- Know yourself first and start a business according to your knowledge
- Know the market trend of the business you are starting
- Who could be your potential customer?
- What will be the process of establishing the business?
- What will be the starting cost?
All the teachings my father taught me can also be applicable in starting a blog. How can they be?
The very first thing in blogging is what you are going to write? You should know yourself and the topic about which you are starting a blog, and both should be in sync.
You knew yourself, understood the topic and the relation. Now, does the topic you chose has any trend in the market? Knowing this is very important. Cause trends are the path of growth in starting a blog
Your topic has a trend in the market. But who will be your potential customers or readers? What are their thought process or ideologies? This is important because finally, they are going to make you stable in your journey of starting a blog.
You found your customers, your readers and their ideologies. Now, it is time to establish your blog, but do you really know, how to start one? You must know the steps of starting a blog to sustain your business.
You got the idea of starting a blog. But, do you know the starting cost? How much you are going to pay minimal? This is a must known factor.
So, these were the teachings my father gave me when I asked for money.
You have made up your mind, now it’s time to choose your category. So, Choosing a category is our step#2.
Step #2. Finding the Right Niche
Well, suppose your father agreed and ready to help you financially.
But, now it is time to select a major project you are going to sell. In other words the category of product.
It could be anything category, like fashion ( Apparels, footwear, jewelry, etc.), Health & Fitness, Electronics, etc.
Before selecting the category of the product we must introspect ourselves that in which category we will be more efficient.
In the field of blogging, a product category is called a niche. Finding the right niche is just like finding the right product category to start with.
Selecting a good niche that is suitable for you is an art. There is a lot of niche on the internet and all are not best for you. A very few could make you rich. It depends only on you and your attitude what will be the best for and whatnot.
A niche is nothing but the category you are going to write about.
You could find a lot of articles on the internet about this topic.
After finding a good niche, here comes the selection domain name.
Step #3. Choosing a Searchable Domain Name
You got permission from your father, selected your product category you are going to sell.
Now, it’s the time for doing the registration process. Registering the name of your business.
It is said that always select the name of your business in such a manner that your potential customers get attracted by just listening to the name.
There is much other domain name provider but I always suggest GoDaddy because it is just awesome in terms of services.
Step #4. Host Your Blog On best Hosting Provider
Well, till now you have selected your product category aka niche, registered it.
Where would you put your products? Your registered name can’t carry your products.
For this, you will need a shop where you can put your products and services.
Similarly, to keep your files on your blog you would need storage space on the internet. To make your presence on the internet confirmed, you will need hosting.
Having a hosting is like having a shop in a marketplace. Hosting providers provide space on a shared computer or on a virtual computer or a dedicated computer for you to keep your data.
In today’s world, there are numbers of hosting provider companies. At your initial stage, you could choose any hosting provider and can change your hosting to a superior one as you grow.
Keeping Your budget in mind, here I am suggesting you two hosting providers. One is costly, and the second is very cheap.
- HostGator – If your budget is more than 10k, I would suggest you choose HostGator. You can get from the link above.
- Bluegeekhosting – This is the cheapest hosting I know. This provider provides you great plans just starting from ₹45/mo without any hidden charges. You can check this once from the link above.
Step #5. Installing WordPress
You registered your business name, selected the shop space.
Now, it is time to make this shop space into your workspace. For this, you would need to install important tools to start your work and make your shop live.
In blogging, to make your blog live, it is important to install your dashboard. WordPress dashboard.
After getting your site hosted. Your next step is to install WordPress.
WordPress is a content management system. It provides you the back end control to your blog.
To install your blog, log in to your C-Panel account provided by your hosting provider. Then, go to the Apps area and select WordPress.
After that following the link as http://yoursitename/wp-admin, you can login to your WordPress Dashboard.
From here you can further change your theme from the Appearance navigation tab.
Step #6. Getting the Best Theme for Your Blog
You installed all the important tools in your shop space. Then It is time to make it look better.
In blogging, a theme gives your blog a good look.
A theme is one of the major tools for on-page SEO.
Themes play important role in SEO, how? Well, for SEO, there are two main things that depend on the theme of your blog. One is speed and the other is the schema.
A lightweight website is always better for speed performance. You can check the speed performance of your blog from google’s page speed test.
There are many lightweight themes you can download from WordPress itself. Here I am listing a few of them.
- GeneratePress- Best theme for any niche you have. Just download this theme and enjoy it. It has both free and paid versions. Free is with limitation of features while the paid version gives full control.
- Astra- One more lightweight excellent theme. It comes with free and paid versions like generate press.
- Neve– This theme is also a good option as a lightweight theme.
These three themes are sufficient to select. But if you want more option you can check various theme stores like mythemeshop.com, themeforest.com etc.
Themes are not the only important tool in establishing the your WordPress blog but its plugins also play an important role.
Step #7. Downloading Must Required Plugins
After installing WordPress and setting up the theme, the next step is to download at least basic plugins that are must be required.
Plugins work as catalyst for your blog. It provides additional features to your blog and enhances the functionality.
There are millions of plugins on the WordPress store itself. Don’t panic, you don’t need all of them. You just need as per your requirement.
But here are few types of plugin that are must needed for any niche.
- SEO Plugin – for this, Yoast and Rank Math is the best option. These plugins help you with your on-page SEO.
- Speed Optimization – There are many plugins in this category but I personally Autoptimization Plugin if you are looking for free. But if you are going towards the paid one, WP Rocket is second to none.
- Image Optimizer- I personally recommend short pixels for this purpose. There are many other plugins like smush, compress jpg, etc. These plugins help you to compress your images. You can get a short pixel from this link.
- Social Sharing – Ultimately Social is the best plugin in this category. It allows you to share your content on social media channels.
- Form Editor- Contact form 7 and WP forms both are good options in this category.
There are a lot of plugins, we can’t show all of them here. The plugins alone require a separate post to be described. So, wait for the dedicated post.
After installing the plugins, it is time to move to the writings. Write your first content, make your important pages.
But before writing a single word, it is important to do some research, keyword research.
Step #8. Keyword Research
Why most of the pro bloggers suggests to do keyword research?
The reason is here.
Keyword research is the way of keeping a eye on your readers’ mind.
This is the way to find your potential readers’ desires. What they think? what they search? and what they crave for?
You would never be successful in blogging if you don’t know what your readers are seeking. It is important for you to know their desire and their way of thinking.
Just take an example, you are in a country where all the population uses their native language for communication and you don’t know their language.
Now, here comes the tragedy. You are targeting that country with your own language keywords. it is anyhow possible to rank that article. No, never. Your article is never going to rank.
For the knowledge demographic keywords, you just need to do keyword research for that particular demography.
Keyword Research Tools
For keyword research, there are many tools. Few famous tools are mentioned below
- SEMRush – According to me, it is the no.1 keyword research tool. It provides a 7-day free trial you can have this free trial from this link.

Step #9. Writing Good Quality Content
Our step no. 9 is writing a good quality content.
In the field of blogging, Bloggers say, “content is the king” very well said.
Really, content is the king in the blogging and it is the most important factor SEO.
How can you identify a good quality content? or what are the characteristics of a good quality content.

Step #10. On-Page SEO
Listening the phrase on-page SEO, first thing that comes to newbie bloggers mind is, what actually is it?
So, SEO is the abbreviation of the phrase Search Engine Optimization. In SEO, we actually optimize things according to the Search Engine Requirements.
Well, if we talk about on-page SEO, it is a practice of optimizing a single page to rank in search engines.
In on-page SEO, we need to optimize following things
- Content of the Page
- Title Tag
- Images Alt Text.
Just check what moz.com says about it.
You can check the full article here on the on-page SEO written on moz.com
You have written your article, did proper on-page SEO. But now it is the time to tell people that you have written an article.
Step #11. Social Sharing
There is no chance of ranking your article on the 1st position of Search Engine Result Pages. Haha! I am talking about the 1st position, it will not even come in the list of SERP on day 1.
Then, where would you get the traffic from?
Social Media. Yea, you guessed it right.
Social Media is the first option to get your initial visits. These visits won’t be counted in organic one, rather it will be marked as referrals from social media.
Your presence on social media is one of the most important factors in gaining authority. Google loves blogs present on various social media channels.
This is the time when everyone knows about all major social media channels. Whether it is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest. Each channel has its own way of connecting folks.
So, it is very important for you to have a separate account for your blog. It would better if it sound the same as your blog sounds. e.g. if your blog is as fitnessmonk.com. Then try to have all the social media channel names as Fitness Monk. This would help in off-page SEO.
There are various social media channels but here I am listing the giants only. And you all know them very well.
Here I am not counting YouTube as Social media channel. It became a search engine in itself.
So, lets briefly discuss all 4 down below.
As per wikipedia, facebook has a user base of 2.5 billion a month.
2.5 billion, it’s really huge. I even don’t know how many zeroes will be there In one billion.
It’s a huge user base, and I bet your potential audience must be in it.
So, what you need to start with facebook? My answer is, just 2 things.
- Facebook Page– Create a new page with the keyword you used in your domain.
- Facebook Groups – Follow as many groups as you can in your niche. Be cautious groups must be of your niche or related to your niche.
These were the requisites, but what should you do with these sources.
Well, on your page, post your blog posts and regular Facebook posts. Facebook posts should be posted a minimum of one in a day without any fail. Never go blank with your posts.
On Facebook groups, start posting there too. But keep in mind that the posts must be relevant to your niche and your articles. Do not spam with your links, first create your reputation in the group and ask them to drop your most relevant articles by which the group members get benefited.
This way, you will create your good reputation and group members can become your regular readers too. Again, keep in mind not to spam.
As per Wikipedia, there are total of 321 million active users on twitter, that is too in Feb 2019.
321 million is a huge user base to find your audience.
What do you need to be seen on twitter? Just an account.
Create a Separate twitter account just like you made a Facebook page with the keyword in your username.
Created your account on twitter, now what to do?
Find people in your niche and follow them. Whenever you create a post, share it to twitter also.
Only sharing on twitter is not sufficient. Approach to the persons with same interests and tell them about your article.
It’s easy, approach them and tell about your article and ask to share your link with them.and ask them to read your article. Not everyone is going to accept your proposal but is it not good if 1 out of 10 accepts your proposal. Try this once, you must get success.
Instagram is also a good option to take up as a source of huge traffic.
How can you do this?
The very first requisite of this is your presence on Instagram. So, make your account as you made earlier for Facebook and Twitter.
You can use canva.com to make beautiful instagram post related to your article and post them on your account.
In your website section put the web address of your article. Use relevant hashtags to increase your reach.
This will surely help.
Pinterest is an image sharing social media platform.
The best thing about it is, it allows you to add links with each post you made there.
Use canva.com and make beautiful pinterest images relevant to your article. Post them on pinterest and add your link. That’s it.
You did everything as mentioned above in the article, still, your blog is not ranking on first page.
According to Brian Dean, there are 200 factors affecting your ranking and the most important of it is creating good quality backlinks. Creating backlinks is counting on off-page SEO.
Step #12. Off-Page SEO
We’ve discussed on-page SEO where we optimize our live pages as per the requirements of the search engine. But on-page SEO alone is not sufficient, you need to optimize your page remotely.
Optimizing remotely means not from your WordPress dashboard but away from your dashboard. This activity is called off-page SEO.
What is off-Page SEO?
Optimization actions done to impact ranking outside your website is called off-side SEO or off-page SEO.
According to moz.com, creating backlinks is the heart of off-page SEO. The links work as nerves to convey the link juice as nerves convey the blood in our entire body.
So, more the links you have more will be the chances of getting ranked. But it depends on the quality of the links.
How can you identify a good quality links?
A link fro a high authority website is considered as good quality backlink.
Types of Backlinks
As per moz.com, there are three types of backlinks
- Natural Backlink– This type of backlinks are given by the publishers to a website that they follow. Like I added a link of moz.com. No one from moz.com approached to me to add this link, I added it to my own desire. This link is the most powerful one.
- Manually Built Links– These types of links are built on requests like writing a guest post and then the publishers allow you to add your link. Asking influencers to share your article. This one is of moderate power.
- Self Made Links– These types of links are created by adding a link on the online directory, forums, blogs, or comments. These are low-quality backlinks, even sometimes these backlinks impact negatively on your blog.
How to create Backlinks
Well, there are various methods of creating a backlink and here I am including a few powerful methods.
- Guest Post
- Sponsored Post
- Round-Up Post
- Creating Infographics
- Finding dead links in other sites and requesting to replace them with yours.
- Asking Webmasters directly to link back your blog.
These are only a few methods, there are a bunch of them. You can find all the best methods of creating backlinks in the article written by Mr. Ankit Singla on his blog masterblogging.com.
So, this was all about starting a new WordPress blog.
It is not tough, just make your mindset and follow the methods mentioned above. That’s it, you are in.
Blogging is the future as everyone is going online today. There is a huge scope of blogging but you need to have patience.
